Hi Guys
ok so most know I run an astronomy enrichment at my kids school and I thank everyone for their support and those that have popped in and helped when I called out π
now the year 10's are doing the duke of Edinburgh award (bronze) and I have been asked if I could help out with that as astronomy is a recognised skill .
Has anyone done or know anyone that has done the DofE and astronomy as there skill section I'm mainly looking for info on what they did for it so I can check my enrichment programme and see if it needs to be adjusted currently we do in no particle order and weather dependant ( as if I needed to add that π )
Solar System , Stars and their lifeline, constellations, distances, galaxies, telescopes and mounts, obs with and without a telescope, some experiments, and using the LGCOT network for planning and taking images.
also thinking of adding making a very simple telescope.
all advise welcomed
Hi, Simon. My daughter did bronze DofE and coincidentally did astronomy. Her GCSE at ROG qualifies for her 'skills' section but that's actually over-the-top as far as bronze DofE is concerned.
I believe that the bronze requirements are a bit vague but it looks like what's needed is something that takes an hour of their time every week for a period of 3 months.
This may help - but my daughter says you should speak to the DofE coordinator (whether at the school, if it's the school running the DofE programme or the regional coordinator) about how advanced the sessions ought to be.
One of the key things is they need to collect evidence they've done it - such as photographs of them at a telescope viewing, course certificate (!) etc.
Hi Andy,
Thanks for thatΒ i'll have a chat with the school co-ordinator the enrichment (which is one of the more popular ones now which is great)Β is an hour long so that part is covered πΒ I think I've covered it all with my little programme but will check with the co0ordinator just in case
been looking at the DofE site a lot the past few days and it is very vague for specific requirements
Thanks again
