Very interesting article in the Guardian this morning about some work that researchers at UCL have been doing to enhance images from NASA’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

See https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/apr/26/beagle-2-most-detailed-images-yet-of-lost-mars-lander-revealed

They are using a stacking method (familiar with many astrophotographers, I suspect!) to bring out extra details in the images. The article focuses on the fact that they've managed to pick up a detailed image of Beagle 2, which is amazing stuff:

But then, they top it all in my opinion, by showing an image of the tracks of NASA's Spirit Rover (bottom right, with the original image top right):

Quite astonishing that they've managed to tease this much information out of the images.

Beagle 2 came "excruciatingly close" to succeeding, says Leicester University.
The article quotes our next speaker, Manish Patel.
