I'm interested in the History Of Astronomy talk on the 30th Sept this Tuesday, I've only recently joined and was wondering if I need to let anyone know I'd like to attend. For some of the observing evenings getting there shouldn't be a problem but for the ones I cant I read about car sharing? I don't mind covering petrol etc.
David
For the History meeting you can just turn up but it is better to let Mike Meynell Know. For the meetings there is a booking system via the museum website, you will get an e-mail to let you know when booking is open which will have a link. The observing events at Black Heath are easily accessed via public transport. With the other observing events lifts are offered, again this is done via e-mail.
I hope this helps?
Hi David,
Welcome to the Flamsteed. I've reserved you a place for the History of Astronomy talk. We do prefer people to book for this in advance, rather than just turn up on the night, so that we know how many people to expect and that your name is on the entry list for the museum staff to check. Now that you are on this list, we will send you access instructions in a few days.
As Brian has mentioned, Blackheath is very accessible and open to all. No need to book, and you can get there under your own steam. We normally offer car sharing for our observing events further afield, such as Cudham and Romney. For Romney, you have to book, as we can only have 6 people on site, due to space constraints. If you want to go on one of these events, let me know (the 24 October Romney session is already fully booked, but we have spaces for the others).
Brian has also mentioned booking for lectures. Bookings open a couple of weeks prior to each lecture, and you book via the museum website.
For any other events that need bookings, this is done via an email to the Flamsteed email address. All of this will be provided to you when we get your membership details from the museum (which is usually at the start of each month).
Hope to see you at a future event.
Mike.

And the jokes, Tej. Don't forget how much you've enjoyed the jokes 😉
Welcome, David! You're sure to discover plenty in this forum - and the Society - that you'll find of interest!
Thank you for the replies and making me feel welcome 🙂 And thanks Mike for reserving me a place at the talk on the 30th, I've been to Greenwich Park quite alot, lovely place, I'm also a big fan of Goddards pie and mash next to the park but that's another story 🙂
David cool picture.
Cheers 🙂
Hi David! Welcome to the Flamsteed from me as well!
Hope you enjoy your time with us on line and offline!
Don't mind Andy... Jokes? I don't know what he's on about. Jokes? Us? We only do serious astronomy.
:p
Enjoying it so far 🙂 I get the feeling you guys (and gals) have a good sense of humour. which is going to be necessary when it comes to my knowledge of astronomy. I'm joking im sure its not that awful :p
Two astrophysicists are discussing their research in a bar one evening when a drunk who overheard them in the next seat turns and says in a very worried voice, “What was that you just said?” “We were discussion stellar evolution, and I said to my colleague here that the Sun would run out of nuclear fuel and turn into a red giant star in about 5 billion years, possibly melting the Earth.” “Whew!” says the drunk, “You really had me worried. I thought you said 5 million.” - See more at: http://astrobob.areavoices.com/2014/01/14/hey-whats-so-funny-31-dubious-astronomy-jokes/#sthash.cg8KELAQ.dpuf . Bad joke?! Does this beat Andy?
Yeah, just about, Brian! Those are great!
My favourite from your link: "A neutrino walks into a bar… and keeps right on going …"
Thats my favourite too, Andy but the rest are terrible! Your ones are much better because, they're both clever and terrible and delivered with panache 🙂
Tej, as they used to say at my stamp collecting club, "Philately will get you everywhere...!"
Philately will get you everywhere…!
Oh dear... haven't had to use this for a while...
