Another opportunity for Flamsteed members to get annoyed at the technical inaccuracies of Hollywood comes next year with a movie called Life. The crew of the ISS conduct research into life on Mars and discover that their research methods have unintended consequences...
Look forward to it...as per my normal viewing reactions, it will be transcendental on my first viewing and then a load of rubbish on my second 😉
What space faring scifi film has anyone seen that felt the most authentic? Â 2001? Gravity? Â The Martian? Â There was also a film called Europa Report I seen a couple of years ago about a ship's journey to Europa and attention to details on their trip was impressive. Â The whole trip was viewed through the ship's CCTV cameras to crank up the realism, worth a watch, was a good film, I think it's on Netflix if you subscribe to it)
Interstellar was pretty good science wise. Though the failure to apply Newton's Laws of motion in relation to the space ship. Also how can a space ship that needed a very large rocket to leave Earth can then escape from the water world near the black hole , Gargantua, with only it's on board engines is beyond me.
Gravity not that good in my opinion but Prometheus was appalling. Not seen The Martian yet.
The Martian is a surprisingly humorous and fun film, which is not one would expect from a Ridley "serious" Scott film. Â The science behind it was interesting but of course for narrative purposes, a lot of liberties are taken. Â Worth a watch, Brian, Â very different in tone to his Prometheus. Â And totally agree with you, the "evolution" science depicted in Prometheus is so ridiculous its hilarious. Â I enjoyed all of them in their own way though.
But I think Kubrick/Clarke's 2001 is still the benchmark for realism science, even more so today than it was then given that some of the predictions have come true.  Although, it got so much drastically wrong, it's the high percentage of scientific plausibility that  makes it a winner.
I agree to some extent about 2001. For me the film that set the template in many ways was The Forbidden Planet you can see the influence it had on Roddenberry. For fun you cannot beat Plan 9 From Outer Space.

2001 every time, for me - spoiled only slightly by the presence of Leonard Rossiter (who I detested in those ghastly 'comedies' - such an unpleasant character, though I'm sure as a real person he was a gem).
In light of what we now know about Europa, you have to admit 2010 Odyssey II was pretty cool!
