Half a tonne of satellite ploughing into the surface of Mercury at almost 9,000mph (or about 4km/second) is going to create quite an impressive collection of scrap metal - though only at the molecular level, I guess!

Radio DJ this afternoon suggested that as it's carrying foodstuffs then, if it lands in your back garden, you might have a ready-made barbecue.

I see it's got "fuel" in its cargo: what kind, I wonder? Tanks of propane? Firewood? Jerry cans of diesel? 20,000 AA Duracell batteries? A crate of sunshine to top up the solar panels?
