Superb article in the Guardian this morning (and I don't often say that!) about the battle between General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.

Which one will win? I like the "chunky universe" idea... but the classicist in me wants relativity to hold out!

Which one will win?

There's only one way to find out!

For the scale of chunkiness that Hogan hopes to find, he needs to measure distances to an accuracy of 10^-18m, about 100m times smaller than a hydrogen atom, and collect data at a rate of about 100m readings per second.

Well, if I've got the right number of zeroes on this, 10^-18 is equivalent to 1/6,667th of a millimetre compared to 1 astronomical unit.

I find the level of precision required for these sorts of experiments about as mind-boggling as the theory.
