Good Morning... Just posting to say hello.

Have just joined the society (not just forum) and hope to come along to some of the events, time and commitments permitting.

Have booked to come along on the 13th October to see the telescope in action. Is there anything I need to know or do? I'd be coming by road. I know parking is awful in Greenwich - is that the same in the evenings?

I own an ED80 APO with EQ5pro, Nexstar 6 and WO60 - but they are just collecting dust. Hopefully that will change

Many thanks.

Hi Les. Welcome to the Flamsteed!

Don't worry about parking. Instructions will be sent to you soon, but essentially you can park directly in front of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park. We have special arrangements to get into and out of the park after it has closed.

Some nice scopes you have there. Hopefully you can make use of them at some of our observing sessions!

Thanks Mike. You may recall me speaking to you in June about joining (and a family membership for the museums). My 15 year old has now gone from a budding astonomer to a computer game potato.

That's useful to know parking isn't a problem. I was half thinking about using the trains.

Looking forward to coming along. (I "applied" for a ticket on the day I joined, so hopefully everything is OK.)

Regards

Yes, I remember our email conversation. Glad that you've now decided to join.

We've got your booking for the Great Equatorial Viewing event. I will be in attendance on 13 October, so look forward to meeting you then.

Hi Mike

Ive not received any instructions for parking for tonight..... (Though I have for the a lecture that took place last night and wasnt attending.... not sure if that was intentional.) I read there are "special instructions" for access.

Anyway... not knowing my way around Greenwich, if you could just clarify.

The email for the lecture mentions access via Romney road. Looking on google maps (street view), I can see Romney Road, but not sure where the entrance would be. (The only turning I saw was no entry!)

Cheers

Les

Hi Les,

I've checked our email system, and you were definitely sent instructions by Nick Phillips on both Sunday and Monday. Could you check your spam folder, please?

There will be a further communication later today, as we've been told that the area outside of the ROG is being used by a film crew, but we can still park inside Greenwich Park, just beyond the mini-roundabout and walk a short distance to the Royal Observatory.

In October, the park is open until 7pm, so you can enter by car via any gate. If you arrive after 7pm, then you must go to St Mary's Gate in Greenwich (junction Nevada Street and King William Walk). You are correct, King William Walk is one-way. Therefore, the easiest way to access is to turn left into Stockwell Street, then left again (just by Greenwich Theatre) into Nevada Street, and the park entrance is on your right at the end of the road.

Tell the security guard on the gate that you are there for a Flamsteed event, and he will direct you up the hill to the ROG.

Otherwise, just get to the park before 7pm and you can get in via the Blackheath Gate at the top of the park (or St Mary's Gate, whichever is more convenient), and drive down to the ROG.

At the end of the evening, all cars will exit via St Mary's Gate. You can then proceed along King William Walk to Greenwich town centre and go around the one-way system.

I hope this helps.

Mike.

Ive checked using filters (for Flamsteed) and checking mails one by one (including spam folders) and I honestly cannot see anything. I'll bring an iPad along tonight to see if we can work out where its vanished... There may be something logical (like ive selective blindness haha)..... but I've checked and especially 11 and 12 as suggested.

I have received forum replies - and 2 sent by yourself on the 5th (newsletters and trip to  Herstmonceux)

I should arrive before 7 so should be fine to get in.

Regards

Hi Mike

Firstly great to come along last night. Planetarium was interesting. Shame no telescope use, but I will certainly be rebooking.

Regarding my email problem. I have double and triple checked all folders and as said, nothing has been received in my google account. As you are aware, my email address is my own domain - which is redirected from my host on to gmail (my ISP doesn't figure in the equation).

I had a brainstorm to see if emails are saved with my host as well as being forward. Lo and behold, the 3 emails you mentioned (Sun, Mon and Tues) were all sitting there. I have no idea why its stopped forwarding my emails - but on reflection, it explains why my amazon order details havent come through either. Ive lodged a support ticket. I certainly never doubted something was sent, but did wonder if my address may have been wrong. Dunno yet if its my host or google causing the problem, but at least I know its one or the other.

OK - that was just to update... But do have a question...

On arriving at the observatory, it was hard not to be impressed with the view of Canary Wharf and Dome. Do you know what the ruling is on the park coming and going? ie Would it be possible to set a tripod up and take some night time photos (either as a seperate visit - or after another ROG event?)

Cheers

Les

Hi Les,

Very pleased that you enjoyed the event last night, despite the weather.

I'm glad you've managed to solve the "great email mystery"... well, at least you know that the you have been receiving the emails, even if they are not being forwarded.

As regards access to the park, we have special arrangements to gain access to the ROG after the park has closed. This doesn't extend to the whole park however... which is why pedestrians must use a shuttle bus after the park has closed.

I have been known to sneak out and take a photograph of the view...

... but this isn't officially encouraged!!

One thing I would say... in the period November - January, it's pretty dark by 5.45pm. The park closes at 6pm, so you would have an opportunity (albeit short) to take an image of the view.

Cheers Mike I will take a look at the pictures later (its blocked at work.)

Well there is good news and bad news. I've not got to the bottom of the email problem and now corrected it (at least for the short term.)

Bottom line, either the host has had a database corruption (possible but unlikely) or my account with Dreamhost - which Ive had for about 10 years was compromised. All the other email addresses on my account were untouched - but my personal one, the redirection to my email address was changed to   j@***.com - so who ever he is, has been getting my email since Saturday. (I know that to be the case - because thats when my account started storing my emails in webmail.

Worryingly, some very personal details (including my fathers will with lots of addresses inside the documents) were amongst those intercepted.

A reminder to be alert people!

I shall probably make the effort each evening I come along and bring a tripod. Like this one you did.
