Here's the results of this morning's 5am viewing. The wide shot is mine to give a bit of context and the zoom shot is my daughter Katie's. The zoom on her camera is fantastic but it can be tricky to focus. I think it's quite good at showing the different colours of the planets, however. They were about 12 arcminutes apart, going by Stellarium, so about half the angular diameter of the Moon. And by 5.30, just as we were starting to lose Jupiter in the light of sunrise, the clouds came over.

Great pictures, Andy.

In haste, as about to head out for a 13-mile walk, but received the following pictures from Martin Male in Romney this morning:

Martin notes that the two planets are about 0.5 Moon diameter apart when the image was taken.

Really good photos everyone.  Maybe we could have a section showing members photos on occasions at our meetings.

Thanks Brian, and yes I think it's a great idea - actually the plan was to do something like that when I set up Flickr but never got round to it (guilty!)

However, there were perhaps not even astrophotographers at the time, and now that the Flickr group has grown, I have several ideas to propose at the next cttee meeting. 🙂

That sounds great.  A few members have spoken to me about doing something like this. I think it will be very popular.  Maybe we could have a slide show running as members find their seats.

Great minds think alike - that's exactly what I had had in mind - especially with Flickr having a slideshow facility. The only issue I had encountered was that the time I wanted to run a demo of the new Flickr Group, we could not access the website online because it was blocked.

I also have other ideas but perhaps not best place to discuss on the Forum...

Tej, There's always Saturday, see Andy'd post.

You can use TPH to plan where to take photos from, if you want to have a foreground object!

I looked quickly for you guys in London, and you could definitely do something with Tower Bridge, or the Cutty Sark.

Also, Tej - you can subscribe to Flamsteed's google calendar which has such events recorded. Additionally, if you have have Twitter and Facebook? You can get notifications such as those on these media too, so you don't miss other highlights! 🙂

Wow, I never knew of Flamsteed google calendar!  I Just added it, thanks.  I am obviously not paying enough attention that Resources tab!

I am not a twitter user...as its just too much for me.  I like a simpler focussed life...facebook and twitter throws my mind into chaos 🙂

I do have accounts though and I do pop into facebook.

🙂 I would tend to agree, which is why........ you do not even need an account as the posts for all social media are on the homepage (there are tabs, you can select which to display).

Google calendar is on the homepage too, but better to download to get the reminders 🙂

Hope this helps!

Excellent advice about the Twitter and Facebook pages, Sumitra. I'm on FB and I have two Twitter accounts*, one of which is purely for following astronomy-related feeds - but with all that social networking nonsense going on it's easy to miss a lot of the Flamsteed output as it gets swamped by so much else. So those tabs on the home page are great for catching up! (* Anyone who knew me five years ago will find that impossible to believe.)

I am no longer on FB as I got fed up with a lot of the crap that was on it.  I am still on twitter but I only have people on there that I am interested in, mostly science, and can block any people that I feel are suspect.  I get my Flamsteed post on twitter.
