We've received the following communication from the organisers of a new event, which may be of interest...
"We (Sarah and Pete) are organisers of a new event which may be of interest to you. The event is an Astronomical Festival but combining the added entertainment of a music festival also!
Our event will happen August 14th-16th 2015 and will be called 'SOLARSPHERE'.
We will have talks, workshops, stalls and music and all of this from midday Friday 14th until you have to vacate the site by midday Monday 17th will be at the bargain price of £45 per ticket. Under 14's free. Camping is FREE, Parking is FREE Showers are FREE.
This will take place at Penmaenau Farm in Builth Wells, Powys, Mid Wales in beautiful surroundings with dark skies!
The venue is purpose built and hosts many events throughout the year. There is the main stage area where the bands will play and where the bar is. Adjoining this is the catering area and an area for stalls.
The second building will be home to the lectures and workshops which will include solar observing, solar imaging, night sky observing, astro photography, questions and answers, debate, plus more.
This is where we need your involvement. Rather than presume what everyone will find enjoyable, we have booked just a few talks/bands but would like to give all of the astronomical societies the chance to help mould the event too!
We would like to get the ball rolling on this asap and so we'd love to know if this is something you'd be interested in attending, what sort of music you would like to be included such as folk/rock/pop/space rock/celtic/blues/reggae/metal etc etc... and what other space related topics you would like to see included as talks or workshops, plus any other suggestions."
Website link is here.
Any thoughts / suggestions? Would anyone be interested in attending?
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing this information.
I think it's a fine idea, but I'm undecided about this as... I've never gone to such festivals before - well or I've only stayed there a day. It's a little far away timewise to know for sure where I'll be. Also, I'd have to invest in the camping gear as I do not have one.
My thoughts are I'd rather go on a 1 or 2 night camping trip to take photos of the sky, milky way etc. rather than a festival.
But these are only my thoughts 🙂
I'm not a festival sort of person but I'm happy to suggest a playlist for the music...
Dark Side of the Moon (album)
Across the Universe
Eye to the Telescope (album)
Life on Mars
Anything by Freddie Mercury
Mozart's Symphony No 41
Holst's The Planets Suite (hmm - not exactly festival music, is it)
Vincent by Don McLean
Shooting Star (Elkie Brooks album)
Bill Hailey and the Comets
Moonshadow
Total Eclipse of the Heart
Space Oddity (of course!)
I am a survivor of several wet Glastonbury Festivals. The scenes in 1985 still make me shudder... the only way off the site was via tractor. The last one I went to was 1992... and I vowed to never go to another festival!
I take it neither of you are going then?
Perhaps we can use Andy's fab playlist on Blackheath instead? 😉
What's not to love about festivals?! Standing in a massive puddle of filth while awaiting the headline act to appear on a semi-submerged stage… I'm in (seriously, I've only ever had good experiences at festivals but I've never camped at one)
Love Andy's playlist idea… I'm gonna add the following:
Stardust - Ian Brown (This is my favourite astro themed song)
Supermassive Black Hole - Muse
Ray of Light - Madonna
Space Truckin - Deep Purple
Rocket Man - Elton John (Actually, I omit this one as I dislike this song a lot!!!)
Stellar - Incubus
..And as Sumitra suggested… A playlist for Blackheath 😉
How about: Set the controls to the heart of the Sun - Pink Floyd
Black Hole sun - Sound Garden
Eclipse - Pink Floyd
Prettiest Star - David Bowie
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
Stargazer - Rainbow
It's only a paper moon - Nat King Cole
At a push: Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Nice! Looks like we've formulated the foundations of a Flamsteed astro playlist 🙂
Could be played at the Christmas Party.
You volunteering to be the DJ Brian?
Just call me DJ Supernova
I love this Mary Chapin Carpenter song.
She must have had bloody good eyesight to see Halley's comet in 1986! It was rubbish trying to view it with the naked eye.
Sorry, I'm being a cynic again... nice song 🙂
Jackson, Mississippi, is further south than London therefore it was closer to the comet making it easier to see 😉
Right, then: can you name the song that refers to the major astronomical event of 1970?
