A most enjoyable observing session in Romney last night. Weather conditions were not are their best, as there was a lot of moisture in the air and some hazy cloud. However, we made the most of the conditions, and saw some great sights through Martin's 14-inch Meade.
The highlight for me was being able to see, visually, at least 2 of the moons of Uranus... possibly 3, using averted vision, but I'm not convinced... anyway, 2 moons were very clearly visible. A real treat to see. Definitely saw Oberon (magnitude 14.2) and Titania (magnitude 14.0), and possibly caught a sight of Ariel (magnitude 14.2) as well.
I didn't do much in the way of photography, as the conditions weren't really conducive. However, I did run my obligatory star trails sequence. Really pleased with this one... as I was using a Canon 60Da, the star colours are very nicely enhanced (no digital manipulation in this image... this is pretty much the raw stack):
Romney Star Trails showing Colour Differences by MikeMey67, on Flickr
We left before 11pm, but then got a panicked phone call from Nick who'd managed to get his van stuck in the mud (as we know, there's been rather a lot of rain recently). Rupert swung the car around, and we managed to tow him on to firmer ground. An exciting end to the evening!
Many thanks to Rupert for giving me a lift, and, of course, to Martin and Jane for their superb hospitality.
What a fabulous photograph, Mike! Autumnal colours in the stars? Amazing!

Thanks Andy.
It's a very colourful part of the sky... I pointed the camera towards Taurus, so we have Auriga and (later on) Orion in the view. I must admit that the intense colour differences took me a little by surprise when stacking the images this morning, giving how hazy the skies were, but I'm really pleased with the result.
It'll be in the December slide show 😉
Great image Mike
Now that's an impressive star trail photo!

You guys saw the moons of Uranus? bloody hell!

Thanks Tej, much appreciated.

I had seen them once before, so perhaps didn't realise quite how special an event it was when we peered at them, thrilling though it was. It was only when both Martin and Rupert told me afterwards that they'd never seen them visually before that I realised!!
