BAA Radio Astronomy Group's magazine articles

I'm just wondering if we might like to run a practical workshop on this stuff... rather than our usual "talking heads" meeting for the radio group?

Yes, I agree that running a practical workshop would be a good idea, but on what particular subject/subjects and how many of the general membership would be interested? I feel that due to our lack of regular meetings we have lost the momentum gained from our initial meetings and it is difficult to gauge the current level of interest within the membership. (It's a shame that we missed an opportunity to talk about the RASIG's activities at the last member's evening). I think that we should start by holding another "talking heads" meeting if only just to see how many members turn up and to find out who would be interested in a workshop and its subject.  Also we need to discuss a strategy for the group. Are members interested in starting their own project or should we concentrate on a group project (e.g. Radio Jove) to which members can contribute according to their "skill set" and time they have available? We need to consider how to raise awareness/interest of the general membership in the group's activities in the hope of gaining a few more members.

My feeling is that we should concentrate on arranging a radio group meeting within the very new future to discuss these issues.

I see your point Clive but I would suggest that we have had a lot of meetings to discuss strategy for the group.  In the beginning there was a lot of interest but that declined , I suspect due to no practical events for people to become involved in, I think a practical work shop could be a way of gauging interest and could reignite a spark of interest in the group.

I haven't completely thought this through, I admit! However, I saw a practical workshop as a method for getting people interested and regaining some of the lost momentum. Every time we have a "talking heads" meeting, we get lots of people saying they are interested in starting their own radio project, but almost no-one is actually doing it.

Perhaps we could have a demonstration on how to put together a simple VLF receiver... what do all of the components do... what can you achieve. Or maybe one of the simple set-ups using the Fun-cube dongle. Or perhaps something along the lines of the article that was originally referred to in this thread.

As I say, I've not completely thought it through... but I think perhaps people are put off by terminology and not understanding what all the equipment does... so something that people can actually see in operation (or being put together) may be the way forward?
