I hope that everyone enjoyed the talk by Ian Ridpath at the Flamsteed yesterday evening. Certainly, all of the Flamsteed members that I spoke to, told me that they thoroughly enjoy Ian's talk about "Pictures in the Sky".

Personally, I thought that Ian was a superb speaker, and he kept us all enthralled from start to finish with his tales of the history of star names and constellations.

It was also great to present honorary membership to Tony Sizer at the start of the evening. A richly deserved award.

Anyway, I took a few pictures during the evening, which are shown below:

What did others think of the lecture?

Really enjoyed this lecture!

Enjoyed hearing about the origins of the constellations - often wonder what our ancestors thought about when devising these figures in the sky. I'm fond of the picture that Ian painted in my mind when he mentioned that they may have been used as visual aids in story telling. I imagine ancient communities gathered around a communal fire absorbed in these tales - a pleasing thought!

Fascinating also that they will appear differently in the future as stars move. I hadn't thought about that!

An excellent report of this lecture, written by Andy, is now online:
