Thanks to Pat who has been in touch about a 'special buy' on the Aldi website.

A head torch with a red LED option for only £2.99! Pat bought one the last time it was on offer and thought it was pretty good, especially at that price.

See link here.

It's in Aldi stores as of today, apparently. While stocks last.

Great price. I always use one as I had bought three from Argos last year who had them at half price at the time for about £4 each.

However, there is one important thing to look for when buying a head torch. You must make sure they are of the SLIDE switch variety and not the PUSH button type. See with the push button type, you have to cycle through 2 or 3 versions of white light before it reaches the red light. The slide switch ones starts off in a middle OFF position so you either slide one side for red or the other side for right.

That's a great point, Tej... something which is often overlooked. I have a camping headlight torch, which has a red light setting, but it's utterly useless for astronomy, as you need to cycle through the white light settings first. The only way I could use it was by tightly cupping my hand over the light whilst pressing the switch 4 times!!

I gave up using it a while ago, and now have a Petzl e+Lite, which has TWO off settings, meaning that you can switch straight to red or white light, as required. It is a little pricy though, but works very well and is really lightweight.

If it's the same model I bought last year, it slides one way for red and the other for white so no prob. Worth checking though

It's just as Pat describes. Looks good. £2.99 and Aldi in Catford has about, oh, I'd say 60 left!
